Villa Stays

Why a Private Villa Beats a Hotel in Seminyak

When you are staying somewhere long enough to unpack properly, a private villa changes the whole texture of the trip.

There is a moment on every slow holiday when a hotel room starts to feel small. You have been somewhere long enough to want your own kitchen, your own quiet corner, a pool that is not shared with three hundred other guests at eleven in the morning. That is the moment I stop booking hotels and start booking villas, and nowhere has taught me the difference more clearly than Seminyak, on Bali's south-west coast.

Space to actually relax

A hotel gives you a room; a villa gives you a home. In Seminyak the difference is stark. Instead of a corridor and a lobby, you get a garden, a private pool, an open-sided living pavilion where the breeze does the work of any air conditioner. For a slow, low-key trip — the kind where mornings dissolve into afternoons — that space is not a luxury, it is the whole point. When we last went as a group of six, we rented a laid-back 4-bedroom villa in Seminyak and spent more time around its pool than we ever did on the beach, and nobody minded in the slightest.

Privacy and your own pace

The quiet joy of a villa is that nothing is scheduled. Breakfast happens when you wake, not when the buffet opens. There is no queue for a lounger and no stranger's towel on the one you wanted. A housekeeper or cook can often be arranged, which means the comfort of service without the choreography of a resort. You set the pace, and the pace is exactly as slow as you like.

Better value for longer stays

Villas look expensive until you do the sums for a group or a longer stay. Split between a few couples or a family, a private villa with a pool frequently costs less per person than separate hotel rooms, and you gain a kitchen that saves you a fortune on breakfasts and late-night snacks. For a week or more in Seminyak, with its walkable restaurants and gentle surf beaches a short stroll away, a villa is the choice I make every time. It turns a holiday into something closer to living somewhere, briefly and beautifully.
